Skin tags: what do these growths on the skin mean?

In an interview with Healthline, dermatology specialist Dr. Rebecca Baxt explains that the size of skin tags can vary between 1 millimeter and 1 centimeter, with some growths sometimes even larger. They are mostly flesh-colored, but can be darker than the individual’s skin tone.

They are mainly found under the arms, on the neck, eyelids, or in the groin, the doctor adds. And for good reason: these patches of skin can appear in areas of the body with folds, prone to maceration and sweating. When they form, their size usually remains the same. They can also appear individually or in groups with several skin tags. Diagnosis is often made through visual inspection because they are asymptomatic.

Dr. Baxt also specifies that a consultation is strongly recommended in the event of bleeding, itching, painful lesions, or if these patches of skin change color.

What are the causes and risk factors?
While the causes of skin tags are still unknown, health professionals agree that there is a hereditary factor. At the same time, other conditions can contribute to the appearance of these skin growths on the body. These include:

Obesity and being overweight
Age, generally over 40
Pregnancy (in pregnant women, skin tags often appear around the breasts, on the side of the neck, or in the armpits)
High blood pressure
A disruption in sebum production by the sebaceous glands
